Job Summary

The AGLC is expanding its Tobacco Enforcement team, with multiple Investigator positions available.

 

 

Working within the Tobacco Enforcement Unit (TEU) you will be part of an investigative team conducting investigations into violations of Provincial Statutes and the Criminal Code of Canada.

 

As a Peace Officer you will be responsible for investigating offences and laying charges for contraventions of the Tobacco Tax Act, Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act, Fuel Tax Act, Tourism Levy Act and Criminal Code offences as they relate to these Acts.  As a member of the TEU you will maintain close working relationships with Alberta Finance, police agencies, Canada Border Services Agency, and other enforcement agencies to develop intelligence, investigate and charge individuals and corporations involved in the diversion and smuggling of tobacco products. Preparing judicial authorizations, i.e., search warrants, court briefs and ensuring evidence is presented in a professional manner are all requirements in this position.  Provide assistance to the illicit Cannabis enforcement team regarding investigations when required.  Knowledge and compliance with the Peace Officer Act and Peace Officer Regulations is required. 

 

Both superior verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of Criminal Code case law, the interpretation of legislation and a working knowledge and understanding of the rules of evidence; court proceedings; surveillance techniques; and undercover investigational techniques are required to be successful in this position.   Experience in conducting open-source investigations, surveillance and undercover operations would be an asset. 

 

Work conducted in this unit will be carried out in a team environment, thus strong interpersonal skills are required.  Although seldom, Investigators in this position must be willing to be exposed to tobacco smoke during certain investigations. Additionally, you may be called upon to assist Gaming and Liquor Peace Officers in their duties. 

 

A valid Alberta Operator’s License is required for independent fieldwork as you will be subject to travel throughout the Province of Alberta, with some overnight travel required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Related post-secondary diploma (e.g. Law enforcement/ Police Studies) or equivalencies. 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in regulatory inspections/investigations.
  • Prior experience as a Peace Officer or police officer will be considered an asset.
  • Investigative competencies - Investigative Techniques, Search Warrant Drafting, Note Taking, Risk Effective Decision Making and Case Management are an everyday requirement and will be considered an asset (i.e. Investigative Skills Education Program (ISEP) 200 or 300)
