ABOUT LIQUOR & CANNABIS
The Liquor & Cannabis Division resides within Business Development and supports innovative and progressive developments in AGLC’s liquor and cannabis businesses. AGLC is responsible for managing the supply chains of both lines of business in Alberta and all aspects of AGLC’s role in ensuring product fulfillment to downstream private retail enterprises. For Cannabis this includes evaluating incoming products, inventory management, and ensuring the highest quality of products are provided to Albertans. For Liquor this includes registration of liquor products, onboarding and supporting Alberta liquor manufacturers, and performing customs clearances for all liquor imported into the province. The division ensures adherence to applicable federal and provincial legislation and works closely with manufacturers, suppliers, agencies, licensed producers, liquor and cannabis licensees, and related associations. The division is supported by two branches: Stakeholder Management & Operations, and Supply Chain & Warehousing.

Job Summary
The Manager, Category Management leads the team of cannabis Category Managers, providing strategic direction, coaching, and oversight to ensure optimal performance across all product categories within the Liquor & Cannabis division. This role is responsible for developing and executing high-level category strategies, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation to achieve organizational goals. The Manager acts as a key liaison between senior leadership, Licensed Producers, and internal teams, ensuring alignment and excellence in category management practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Category Managers, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
- Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, and support professional growth.
- Champion collaboration and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Strategic Category Oversight
- Oversee the development and execution of category strategies to drive sales, profitability, and market share.
- Ensure consistency and alignment with organizational priorities and market trends.
- Review and approve major category initiatives and plans.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior leadership, Licensed Producers, and key partners.
- Represent the category management function in cross-functional meetings and strategic projects.
- Facilitate communication and alignment between category teams and other departments.
- Performance Management & Reporting
- Monitor category performance metrics and KPIs, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Provide regular updates and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
- Ensure data-driven decision-making across all category teams.
- Process Improvement & Innovation
- Identify and implement best practices and process enhancements in category management.
- Encourage innovation and adaptability in response to changing market conditions.
- Lead initiatives to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
Skills and Abilities
Education & Experience
- 4+ years of progressive experience in category management, merchandising, or procurement, including leadership roles.
- University Degree
Knowledge
- Deep understanding of category management principles, retail operations, and supplier relations.
- Expertise in strategic planning, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of the cannabis industry would be an asset
Skills
- Exceptional leadership, coaching, and team-building skills.
- Advanced negotiation, communication, and relationship management abilities.
- Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI).
