ABOUT THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

The Office of the CEO is responsible to evolve and grow gaming, liquor and cannabis business opportunities and experiences trusted by Albertans through inclusive leadership and to serve as a model for AGLC’s mission, vision & values creating & fostering a culture of innovation and customer centricity.  The Office provides leadership and overall guidance to the administration and operation of AGLC.

The Office of the CEO advises and informs the Board on the operation and affairs of the Commission, ensures that the policies of the Board are implemented, works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs, and support their adaptation to the current environment and will guide the organization through a transformational implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System focused on optimizing processes and streamlining workflows.

SUMMARY

Reporting to the CEO, the Manager, Executive Operations is the liaison for strategic advice between the CEO’s office, AGLC operations, government officials and industry partners. The incumbent adjusts to rapidly changing priorities, and in collaboration with the Executive Team (ET) and AGLC staff, provides issues management on a broad range of matters to facilitate agile decision making. The Manager ensures that the CEO is kept informed through briefings, critical assessments and recommendations.

 

Additionally, the Manager prepares the CEO for attendance at meetings and speaking engagements, attends with them, and is responsible for driving follow-up on action items. The focus of the role is to maximize the CEO’s effectiveness and impact, ensuring the achievement and communication of AGLC’s vision and mission. 

 

Responsibilities and Activities

 

Relationship Building / Issue Management:

  • Effectively coordinate and manage the CEO’s office by identifying emerging and ongoing issues and their timely resolution. Works independently or in consultation with AGLC staff and industry partners, exercising effective judgment to determine when CEO involvement is necessary.
  • Actioning requests for information from the Minister’s Office, Deputy Minister and AGLC Board.
  • Enable alignment of AGLC priorities with our mandate, integrates and supports initiatives with other government departments, external agencies, and reporting entities.
  • Provide direct support to the CEO, recommending actions as appropriate, preparing briefings and background information, including critical analyses and recommendations, and reviewing the content integrity of correspondence sent through the Office of the CEO.
  • Provide analysis and advice, keeping the CEO current on the status of existing and potential issues and trends. This is accomplished through review of incoming information from AGLC staff and industry partners, environmental scanning, analysis, awareness of political sensitivities, and discussions with key stakeholders.
  • Ensure that urgent and politically sensitive matters are brought to the CEO's attention.
  • Attend with (or represent) the CEO at meetings and events to foster meaningful and productive relationships between AGLC and various partners, ensuring follow-up on commitments.

 

Communications:

  • Collaborate with the Policy & Public Affairs Division in telling AGLC's story by providing ideas with a broad organizational view.
  • Manage and prioritize the flow of information through the CEO’s office, to be responsive to government inquiries and industry concerns, working closely with colleagues in the office, ET and other AGLC staff.
  • Support the CEO in drafting external (social media) and internal communications and aligning communication plans with ET and Policy & Public Affairs Division.
  • Initiate critical conversations to keep momentum on priority issues, ensures follow up with ET and/or CEO.

 

Board/Executive Management:

  • In alignment with the Board Office, support the cadence of Board meetings, including aligning with the Executive Team on meeting agenda items and attendees, and reviewing all documents that are presented at sub-committee and Board meetings with AGLC’s strategic priorities to ensure the Board has the insights they need.
  • Oversee the development and execution of the CEO’s performance contract, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities, tracking progress, identifying gaps in deliverables and developing action plans to stay on course.
  • Strategically manage the CEO’s schedule and travel logistics to maximize visibility, enhance engagement with industry partners and strengthen the CEO’s role as AGLC’s brand ambassador.
  • Co-ordinates weekly ET meetings, other senior level meetings and quarterly business reviews, ensuring alignment with AGLC priorities (both operational and strategic) while maintaining visibility on key performance metrics to enable ET to drive AGLC’s mandate.
  • Represent the Office of the CEO at leadership meetings and events. Actively participate in the Senior Leadership Group (SLG) meetings and objectives being the liaison between SLG and the CEO.
  • Ensure the accuracy and relevance of all documentation submitted to the CEO.
  • Supervise the operations of the Office of the CEO including but not limited to manage the SharePoint site and financial management of the Office, including the disclosure of CEO expenses.
  • Oversee the financial management of the Office of the CEO.
  • Coordinate weekly Executive Team meetings and quarterly Business Reviews, balancing agendas with operational matters, strategic opportunities, and key performance metrics.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Post Secondary Degree in Business, Public Administration, Communications or a related field.
  • 10 years of relevant experience; Public Sector and/or financial experience is an asset.
  • A broad view of AGLC operations is an asset.
  • Sound understanding of CEO and Board reporting and government relations.
  • Experience working in a multifaceted, fast-paced environment, well develop verbal and written communication skills in the transfer of information to inform and influence ET and/or CEO.
  • Experience in issues management.
  • Strong change management, project management, and organizational skills, including managing a number of complex issues simultaneously and still delivering on results.
  • Use sound judgment to identify strategic issues requiring action, resolution, and/or recommendations to the CEO.
  • Experience handling sensitive issues under tight deadlines with industry partners and the public, recognizing risks and organizational/government implications, and resolving issues by consulting key internal stakeholders and industry partners as needed.
  • Ability to operate independently and as part of a team, providing accurate information and ensuring that the CEO is aware of relevant issues that may impact AGLC operations and/or reputation.
